PCMag: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has posted a lengthy document that apologizes for last week's cloud outage, explains why it happened and offers affected customers a credit worth 10 days' of service. "We want to apologize," says the company. "We know how critical our services are to our customers' businesses and we will do everything we can to learn from this event and use it to drive improvement across our services."

Amazon blames the outage on a shift of traffic to a secondary network that couldn't handle the load. It plans to solve the problem by automating the network-switching process that caused the initial problem and making it easier for customers to save data across multiple zones. Approximately 0.4 percent of AWS customers in the affected zone were not able to recover their data after the outage.
