CIOInsight: A new survey of top-level executives conducted by the Chally Group sheds light on what skills are considered the most valuable in a CIO. The report found that just 12.5 percent of C-level executives come from an IT background; instead, survey respondents say operations, sales and finance are much more likely to develop good executives.
When asked about the key functions a CIO must serve, 70.5 percent selected "staying on top of technical and business competencies." In addition, 56.5 percent selected "timely and effective execution," and 44.6 percent selected "being collaborative." 40.2 percent said "a failure to build relationships and a team environment" was a top leadership killer for CIOs.
