GigaOm: Juniper Research is now predicting that 300 million devices, including 20 percent of smartphones, will support near-field communication (NFC) by 2014. NFC is a short-distance wireless technology that enables device owners to use their phones as a "digital wallet" by waving it in front of credit card machines to pay for purchases.

The firm said that interest in NFC is growing as more manufacturers, vendors, and network operators announce NFC projects. In addition, retailers are particularly interested in the targeted marketing opportunities it would afford.
