Washington Post: Senators John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) have introduced a new bill that would require Internet companies to explain how they collect personal information about their users and what they do with that information. It would prevent them from collecting users' names, e-mail addresses, credit-card and data about their religion, sexual identity and health without consent. It would also require companies to give users to ability to opt out of data collection entirely.
If the bill passes, companies that fail to keep users' data secure would be subject to fines up to $3 million imposed by the Federal Trade Commission, but would be shielded from private lawsuits, including class action lawsuits.
