Reuters: Facebook is teaming up with Hewlett Packard Co, Dell Inc, Advanced Micro Devices, and Intel Corp for a new initiative called the "Open Compute" project. The group's goal is to produce specifications for more energy efficient servers that are designed to run Internet services. "What we found over time is that a lot of the stuff that the mass manufacturers put out wasn't exactly in line with what we needed and what other social apps needed," said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The new servers would be 38 percent more energy efficient and 24 percent less expensive than off-the-shelf products.
