Computerworld: In a quarter with slumping consumer PC sales, Apple posted solid growth numbers. According to market research firm Gartner, Apple sold 1.9 million Macs in Q4 for a 9.7 percent share of the U.S. market. Meanwhile, researchers at IDC say Apple sold 1.7 million Macs in the U.S. for an 8.7 percent share. Both say that Apple is currently in fifth place in the PC market, behind HP, Dell, Acer and Toshiba.
HP and Dell both lost sales year-over-year, as did Acer, which saw sales plummet around 30 percent as consumers stopped buying netbooks. Toshiba's sales were up.
Both Gartner and IDC agree that tablet PCs are cannibalizing desktop and laptop sales.
