eWeek: According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a joint effort by the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, cybercrime cost Americans $559.7 million in 2009. That's more than twice the $265 million stolen by online scammers in 2008. Online crime complaints for the year totaled 336,655, up 20 percent from the year before.
Because cybercrime is largely anonymous, officials have few suspects. However, most known suspects are male and more than half live in California, Florida, New York, Texas and D.C.
Victims who lost the most were in their 40s, with an average loss of $700. People in their 30s lost the second most, an average of $600.
