DDoS Attack on DNS Hits Amazon and Others Briefly

A Christmas Eve denial-of-service attack prevented northern Californians from accessing Amazon.com services--bad news for last minute shoppers and for enterprises using cloud-based Amazon Web Services.
Network World: On December 24, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack prevented northern Californians from accessing Amazon.com. The first sign of trouble came when customers trying to access the S3 cloud storage service began receiving error messages. Amazon's e-commerce site and EC2 cloud services also experienced outages. A spokesperson from Neustar, which owns Amazon's DNS provider UltraDNS, said the attack was "under control" within an hour.
